# Social Gender Roles Back to [[X Research]] · [[Topics/Social Gender Roles/Sources|Sources]] **In one line:** Posts about whether the roles men and women take on in society are natural or constructed, checked against anthropology, sociology and history. (the kibbutz experiment, quoted from an Aporia Magazine essay). > [!note] Scope > These notes check what the evidence says. They do not take a side on how men and women should live. ## Start here - **The kibbutz is the most-cited natural experiment in this debate.** It was founded on equality and communal child-rearing, and over several decades most of the collective childcare gave way to family households. Both sides agree on that; they disagree on why ([JWA, Fogiel-Bijaoui](https://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/kibbutz)). - **"Men and women initially did identical work" is not supported.** In 1948, across eight Ihud kibbutzim, 78.3% of women worked in services versus 16.7% of men; in 1926 at Tel-Yosef agriculture was almost all men's work and services almost all women's (same source). - **"Women's own preferences, not male domination" is one school.** Tiger and Shepher (1975) and Spiro argued that women led the return to family life; Fogiel-Bijaoui, Agassi and Schlesinger point to structure, status and the division of labor. See [[Users/@calotonterias/Post Analyses/Post Analysis - calotonterias on Kibbutz Gender Roles (2026-10-31)|the analysis]]. - **A single small, ideological community cannot settle nature versus culture.** What the kibbutz shows is that an equal ideology did not produce equal roles. It does not by itself show why. ## Verdict summary | Claim | Verdict | |---|---| | Kibbutzim tried to remove gender roles "entirely" | 🟡 equal participation was the goal, not abolition of all differences | | Men and women first did identical work | ❌ a split is documented from the 1920s | | Children were raised communally | ✅ | | Women drifted toward services and child-rearing, men toward production and leadership | 🟡 true, but present from the start, not only "over time" | | Mothers rejected communal childcare | ✅ / 🟡 largely, across about 30 years, with other causes | | Marriage and private family units re-emerged | ✅ (the word "formalized" ⚠️) | | Anthropologists found it was women's preference, not male domination | 🟡 contested | | So gender roles are biological | ⚠️ not established by this case | ## Posts followed (newest first) | Date (CT) | Author | Post | Analysis | Verdict | |---|---|---|---|---| | Oct 31, 2026, 12:54 PM | [[Users/@calotonterias/calotonterias-x-profile\|@calotonterias]] | [Kibbutz experiment and gender roles](https://x.com/calotonterias/status/2116589631823090013) | [[Users/@calotonterias/Post Analyses/Post Analysis - calotonterias on Kibbutz Gender Roles (2026-10-31)\|analysis]] · [[Users/@calotonterias/Post Analyses/Post - calotonterias on Kibbutz Gender Roles (2026-10-31)\|verbatim]] | 🟡 real history; "identical work" wrong; "women's preferences, not male domination" contested; source essay cites nothing | ## People | Person | Role | Note | |---|---|---| | Sergio Ferrero (@calotonterias) | Spanish health communicator; posted the claim | [[Users/@calotonterias/@calotonterias\|hub]] | | Marc J.
