# Intelligent Design and Origins Debate
Intelligent design (ID) is the claim that features of living things and the universe are best explained by an intelligent cause rather than by unguided natural processes. Its main institutional home is Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture (CSC) in Seattle, directed by [[Topics/Intelligent Design and Origins Debate/People/Stephen C. Meyer|Stephen C. Meyer]]. Mainstream scientific bodies reject ID as science. This hub collects X posts Marshall has linked on ID and the origins debate, and the fact-checks behind them.
> **How to read this.** Each post analysis checks one X post claim by claim against primary sources: court rulings, scientific-society statements, surveys, the ID groups' own pages, and peer-reviewed reviews. Both the ID case and the mainstream response are given with citations. ⚠️ marks anything uncertain or single-sourced. See [[Topics/Intelligent Design and Origins Debate/Timeline|Timeline]] for dated events and [[Topics/Intelligent Design and Origins Debate/Sources|Sources]] for every source used.

## Key facts (checked Oct 24, 2026)
- **ID's three main arguments (Meyer):** information in DNA (*Signature in the Cell*, 2009); the Cambrian explosion (*Darwin's Doubt*, 2013); cosmic fine-tuning and a beginning (*Return of the God Hypothesis*, 2021).
- **Scientists' views:** in 2009, 97% of scientists surveyed said living things evolved and 87% said by natural processes ([Pew](https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2009/07/09/section-5-evolution-climate-change-and-other-issues/)).
- **Scientific bodies:** AAAS board, 2002: ID lacks "credible scientific evidence" and "a scientific means of testing its claims" ([AAAS](https://www.aaas.org/news/aaas-board-resolution-intelligent-design-theory)). NAS, *Science, Evolution, and Creationism*, 2008 ([NAP](https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/11876/science-evolution-and-creationism)).
- **Court:** *Kitzmiller v. Dover*, Dec 20, 2005: "ID is not science" ([Justia](https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/FSupp2/400/707/2414073/)).
- **Lists:**
- Discovery Institute's *Scientific Dissent from Darwinism* has "more than a thousand" signers. It voices skepticism of mutation and selection, and its FAQ says signing does **not** endorse ID ([dissentfromdarwin.org](https://www.dissentfromdarwin.org/)).
- NCSE's Project Steve, signed only by scientists named Steve, has passed 1,500 ([NCSE](https://ncse.ngo/project-steve-n-1500)).
- **ID's own evidence count:** a 186-page CSC bibliography of "peer-reviewed and peer-edited" work, and "more than 250" ID 3.0 publications (CSC figures, 2024).
## Organizations
- **Discovery Institute, Center for Science and Culture (CSC):** founded 1996 by Meyer and John G. West. It runs intelligentdesign.org, dissentfromdarwin.org, the *ID the Future* podcast and *Science and Culture Today*. Address: 506 2nd Ave, Ste 1700, Seattle ([discovery.org](https://www.discovery.org/id/about/)).
- **National Center for Science Education (NCSE):** a pro-evolution education nonprofit in Oakland that runs Project Steve ([NCSE](https://ncse.ngo/project-steve)).
