Back to [[Expanding Earth and Plate Tectonics]]
**Role:** historical background.
- An early supporter of continental drift. In the 1950s he found that continents fit better on a smaller globe and adopted Earth expansion, building on Ott Christoph Hilgenberg's *Vom wachsenden Erdball* (1933) (summarized on the advocate site [dinox.org](https://www.dinox.org/eehistory.html)).
- Book: *The Expanding Earth* (Elsevier, 1976) ⚠️. Dates 1911–2002 ⚠️ (from memory).
- Expansion lost out to plate tectonics after the 1960s, once subduction (Benioff zones, Isacks et al. 1968) accounted for the balance of crust.
