# Juan Perón
Back to [[Economic Freedom and Prosperity]] · [[Case Studies/Argentina]]
**Role:** President of Argentina, 1946–55 and 1973–74
- Army officer and populist (1895–1974) ◻.
- Created the IAPI grain-trading monopoly (1946), nationalised railways and utilities, and expanded unions and welfare ◻.
- The post dates Argentina's decline to his era. The Maddison data show Argentina had already slipped from 10th (1913) to 12th (1930) before him, so the decline started earlier and continued later (see the case study).
