# Research and Evidence Up: [[Consciousness, Neural Transduction and Human Origins]] ## 1. What NTT claims - **The brain is a transducer, not a computer:** it converts signals to and from an "Other Side" (OS), a higher intelligence outside known physics ([Discover, 2021](https://www.discovermagazine.com/mind/your-brain-is-not-a-computer-it-is-a-transducer); [SSRN preprint](https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.6174419)). It builds on Epstein's 2016 essay "The Empty Brain" (Aeon ⚠️ from memory), which argued the brain does not store memories like a computer. - **Origin story:** an infant "between 50 and 70,000 years ago" made an "optimal connection" to the OS, and the trait was heritable and spread (preprint abstract; Popular Mechanics). - **What it claims to explain:** - 17 common phenomena, 10 rare or questionable ones and more than 50 others - dreams, genius, schizophrenia and unconsciousness - Darwin's "uplift problem" - "we believe, the Fermi Paradox" - the 2021 version also lists near-death experiences and "demonic possession" - **Where it would happen:** the claustrum was suggested in 2021. The site is not identified (Revlox: claustrum, pineal or whole brain). - **Testability:** Epstein calls NTT "falsifiable and empirically testable" and lists up to 20 possible tests (Popular Mechanics). None has been run. ## 2. Status of the publications | Item | Type | Peer reviewed? | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Epstein & Zhao 2026, SSRN 6174419 | Preprint, 62 pp. | ❌ (CV: "submitted for publication") | 0 citations; Zhao was a research intern (Popular Mechanics). Popular Mechanics called it "embargoed" | | Epstein 2021, "Brain as Transducer", ScienceOpen | Preprint | ❌ | Also on ResearchGate | | Epstein 2021, *Discover* | Popular essay | — | Admits that hard evidence is lacking | | Book in preparation: *On the origin of human intelligence by means of neural transduction* | Book manuscript | — | From his CV (Sep 2026) | ## 3. What the neuroscientists said (Popular Mechanics, Sep 1, 2026) - **Mayank Mehta (UCLA):** offered his EM-shielded room for tests and said theories need to become quantitative. - **Alysson Muotri (UC San Diego):** proposed brain-organoid experiments. - **Kenneth Kosik (UC Santa Barbara):** skeptical. "I never heard one idea put up by Epstein or anyone that they knew exactly what this entity was." He wants a mathematically tractable model. - ⚠️ The meeting itself: ufospace.net says about 15 specialists met in San Diego in June 2026. Muotri and Kosik spoke at the separate CS2026 conference (Oct 11–16, San Diego), but Epstein is not on that program. ## 4. Mainstream consciousness science - The leading theories, global neuronal workspace and integrated information, are brain-based. The COGITATE adversarial collaboration ([Nature 2025](https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-025-08888-1)) tested both and found mixed support. Neither needs an outside source. - "Filter" and "transmission" theories of mind are older (William James's 1898 Ingersoll lecture; Aldous Huxley's "reducing valve" ⚠️ from memory). NTT is a modern version of that idea. ## 5. Human origins: was there a 50,000-year "explosion"? - **Old view:** a "human revolution" or "Great Leap Forward" about 50–40 ka, possibly from a neural mutation (Richard Klein ⚠️). - **Current view:** modern behaviors appear gradually and patchily, mostly in Africa, well before 50 ka: - McBrearty & Brooks 2000 ([doi](https://doi.org/10.1006/jhev.2000.0435)) - Blombos engraved ochre, about 100–75 ka ([Henshilwood et al. 2009](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhevol.2009.01.005)) - *H. sapiens* at about 315 ka ([Hublin et al. 2017](https://doi.org/10.1038/nature22336)) - **Scerri & Will 2023** ([doi](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhevol.2023.103358)) find no discrete threshold and call the "modernity package" outdated. - 2025 preprint on cultural transmission at Blombos and Diepkloof: Pagnotta, Tylén et al. ([OSF](https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/akhfu_v1)). ## 6. Media trail - Popular Mechanics, Stav Dimitropoulos, Sep 1, 2026 (source of the post). - PJ Media (Rick Moran, Sep 4, 2026), ufospace.net (Sep 4, 2026), Unexplained Mysteries and birdsadvice.com repeated it. - Revlox fact-check (Imrul, Sep 12, 2026): no evidence, no mechanism or math model, no identified transducer site, and a disputed 50k premise.
