## Bottom line
1. **Commercial oil and gas are overwhelmingly biogenic.** They form from buried plankton, algae and land-plant matter, through kerogen, as rocks heat up over millions of years. Thermogenic gas forms the same way, and biogenic gas comes from microbes.
2. **Abiotic hydrocarbons are real but minor.** They are mostly methane, with traces of C2–C4, formed by serpentinization and Fischer-Tropsch-type reactions, mainly in the crust. A few contested accumulations exist, such as China's Songliao Basin ([Etiope & Sherwood Lollar 2013](https://doi.org/10.1002/rog.20011)).
3. **Mantle synthesis of heavier hydrocarbons is a lab result.** High-pressure cells show it is *possible* ([Kolesnikov et al. 2009](https://doi.org/10.1038/ngeo591)), but no one has shown that it fills reservoirs.
4. **Origin does not save "renewable".** Depletion is set by extraction versus natural recharge, and recharge is negligible on human timescales ([Höök et al. 2010](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2010.06.005)).
## Evidence for biogenic origin
| Line of evidence | What it shows | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Porphyrins | Nickel and vanadium porphyrins in oils and shales derive from chlorophyll | [Treibs 1934](https://doi.org/10.1002/jlac.19345090108) |
| Steranes, hopanes, isoprenoids; odd-over-even n-alkanes | "Chemical fossils" of sterols (eukaryotes), hopanoids (bacteria) and phytol | [Blumer 1973](https://doi.org/10.1351/pac197334030591) |
| Oil–source-rock correlation | Biomarker fingerprints match specific organic-rich source rocks. Example: Cantarell oils tie to Tithonian source rocks even though the reservoir is Chicxulub impact breccia | [Cerqueira et al. 2006](https://www.searchanddiscovery.com/documents/2006/06088houston_abs/abstracts/cerqueira.htm); [VUB](https://researchportal.vub.be/en/publications/the-chicxulub-impact-source-for-reservoirs-and-seals-in-southeast-2/) |
| C-isotope pattern of gas | In thermogenic gas, δ¹³C rises from C1 to C4. Abiogenic gas shows the *reverse* trend, and economic reservoirs lack that reversed pattern | [Sherwood Lollar et al. 2002](https://doi.org/10.1038/416522a) |
| Geography | Petroleum sits in sedimentary basins with mature source rocks; "petroleum systems" exploration predicts where it is found | [Glasby 2006](https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1751-3928.2006.tb00271.x); Höök et al. 2010 |
| Optical activity | Some petroleum compounds are optically active, which is consistent with a biological origin | ⚠️ general knowledge; not sourced here |
## The abiogenic case and its best evidence
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrocarbons beyond methane are thermodynamically stable only at high pressure | A theoretical paper; disputed | [Kenney et al. 2002](https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.172376899) |
| Methane forms from FeO + CaCO₃ + H₂O at mantle P–T | ✅ Lab result | [Scott et al. 2004](https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.0405930101) |
| Ethane through butane form from methane at 2–5 GPa | ✅ Lab result | [Kolesnikov, Kutcherov & Goncharov 2009](https://doi.org/10.1038/ngeo591) |
| Abiotic C1–C4 vent fluids at Lost City | ✅ Real; formed by crustal serpentinization; methane-dominated | [Proskurowski et al. 2008](https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1151194) |
| Abiogenic alkanes in Canadian Shield mines | ✅ Real; shown to be a *minor* source | [Sherwood Lollar 2002](https://doi.org/10.1038/416522a) |
| Dnieper-Donets basement fields prove deep origin | ❌ Contested. USGS work identifies Carboniferous and Devonian source rocks | [Glasby 2006](https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1751-3928.2006.tb00271.x) |
| Siljan Ring (Gravberg-1, 1987–1990) | ❌ About 60 kg of paste in 1987 and about 15 m³ (~85 bbl) of sludge by 1990, both attributed to altered drilling fluid and diesel | [Jeffrey & Kaplan 1989](https://doi.org/10.2118/19898-pa); [ETDEWEB](https://www.osti.gov/etdeweb/biblio/7795530) |
| Eugene Island 330 "refills" | 🟡 Active recharge up a fault from deeper *sedimentary* sources; not mantle oil | [Anderson, Cathles & Nunn 1994](https://www.osti.gov/biblio/181770); [Meulbroek et al. 1998](https://doi.org/10.1016/s0146-6380(98)00180-6); [Losh et al. 2002](https://doi.org/10.1306/61eedcce-173e-11d7-8645000102c1865d) |
| "Deep hot biosphere": microbes live kilometres down | ✅ Microbial life at depth is well documented. Gold's mantle-methane corollary is not supported | [Gold 1992](https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.89.13.6045); [Colman et al. 2017](https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1701266114) |
## Depletion data (relevant to "renewable")
- The **IEA's World Energy Outlook 2008** surveyed about 800 fields, 580 of them past peak, and found a **6.7%/yr** production-weighted observed decline for post-peak fields ([WEO 2008](https://iea.blob.core.windows.net/assets/89d1f68c-f4bf-4597-805f-901cfa6ce889/weo2008.pdf)).
- **Höök et al. 2010:** only a "strong" abiotic theory, where generation matches extraction, would change peak-oil logic, and that version lacks convincing evidence.
