## Outline
### 00:00 Intro
- Dune is set on Arrakis, in the real star system of **Canopus**. Frank Herbert chose the real galaxy because he believed space travel would fundamentally reshape humanity and religion ("SPACE TRAVEL!" as a fifth force). The video sets out to "demystify" this with real 3D star positions, stellar astronomy, and expanded-universe lore.
- It ends with a look at how adaptations depict folded space, plus an original Heighliner sequence. The creator notes no AI was used to make the video.
### 00:49 Timeline
- Dune takes place in **10,191 A.G.** (After Guild), about 21,000 years from now. The calendar starts with the founding of the Spacing Guild, around 11,000 C.E.
- The spice **melange** was discovered on Arrakis sometime between 1,000 and 200 B.G. The space-folding (**Holtzman**) drive was invented in 175 B.G.
- The drive can't be used safely without computers or spice. Computers are illegal, so spice it is. Before spice, 1 in 10 ships was lost per jump. Huge doses of spice mutate Guild Navigators and give them limited prescience to plot safe courses.
- The **Holtzman Effect** is the fictional repelling force of subatomic particles. It's the basis for shields, suspensors, and the Heighliners' fold drive.
- Early space travel ("Outracing Photons") was slow and haphazard, so early colonization stayed near Earth. Spoiler warning for the first novel, plus minor expanded-universe spoilers.
### 02:16 Real Stars
- Old Earth still exists but isn't central to the story.
- **Alpha Centauri** (4.25 ly; 4.35 vs 4.25 depends on whether Proxima is counted) is a triple system. **Logi** and **Ecaz** are planets 3 and 4 of Alpha Centauri B. Thufir Hawat was born on Logi. Ecaz is the "sculptor's paradise," home of thought-shaped fogwood.

- **Altair** (16.7 ly): Rima, rich in dilaubite. Its Blue Hill speech influenced the Fremen language. **70 Ophiuchi A** (16.6 ly): Sikun, home of the akarso plant and the Buddislamic Christian Church.
- **36 Ophiuchi** (~19.4 ly): **Giedi Prime**, the polluted, industrial Harkonnen homeworld and third planet of 36 Oph B. It's a rare triple of near-identical orange stars. Stars are lettered A, B, C by their influence on the system.
- **Delta Pavonis** (~19.9 ly): **Caladan**, the lush ocean world of House Atreides (pundi rice). Also **Harmonthep**, a swampy world where a group of Zensunni Wanderers lived. It was later mysteriously destroyed, "Death Star style."
- **Sigma Draconis**: Corrin, named for the Battle of Corrin that put House Corrino on the Padishah throne. Afterward Bashar Abulurd Harkonnen was branded a coward by an Atreides, which started the ~10,000-year Harkonnen–Atreides feud. **Ishkal** (Sigma Draconis IV) is a Zensunni stop and likely where the word *Shai-Hulud* came from.
- **Luyten's Star**: Fides, where dramatist laureate Harq al-Hharba died in 10317 A.G.
- **40 Eridani A** (16.5 ly): **Richese** (planet IV) and, in the expanded universe, **Ix** (planet IX). Both still build machines, which are illegal since the **Butlerian Jihad** (201–108 B.G.; "Man may not be replaced"). That ban is why Mentats and the Bene Gesserit's genetic programs exist. 40 Eridani is also Star Trek's Vulcan. It's a triple with a red dwarf and the first white dwarf ever discovered.
- **Eta Ophiuchi** (88 ly, toward the galactic core) is a Guild **Heighliner graveyard**, where decommissioned ships sit in cold orbits around planetless stars.
- **Epsilon Ophiuchi** (red giant): **Poritrin**, which many Fremen wrongly believe is their world of origin. **HD 95424**: **Rossak**, a Zensunni stop where the Reverend Mother tradition began (Jessica's Water of Life vision) and birthplace of Norma Cenva, inventor of the fold drive.
- **Alkalurops / Mu Boötis** (123 ly): Ix in the original novel and the Dune Encyclopedia. It's the ninth planet, so the Roman numeral became its name. It's the birthplace of Tio Holtzman. The creator jokes that "Tio" is Spanish for "uncle" even though Ixians are implied to have Chinese ancestry.
- **Niushe / Psi Draconis**: Grumman (House Moritani) and Gamont, the hedonistic "dystopian Risa."
### 08:56 Salusa Secundus
- **Salusa Secundus** is the third planet of **Gamma Piscium** ("Waiping," 138 ly). It's one of the few stars on the list with a real exoplanet: a gas giant found in 2021 by radial velocity. The planets in the video are fictional, but most of these stars probably have planets we haven't detected yet.
- It was the original Corrino homeworld, later a prison planet. Its harsh conditions forged the **Sardaukar**: half their children die before age 11, and survivors are fanatically loyal. The Zensunni spent centuries there too, which is part of why the Fremen are such strong fighters, along with Bene Gesserit influence.

### 12:05 Kaitain
- **Kaitain** (**Alpha Piscium**, 151 ly) is the Corrino capital and seat of the Golden Lion Throne.
- **Tleilax** is home of the Bene Tleilax, gene-manipulators who made "twisted Mentats" like Piter de Vries.
- **Bela Tegeuse** is at **Iota Leporis** (232 ly). It's a Zensunni stop later conquered by the Honored Matres. Iota Leporis may be a true physical triple, but the data is inconclusive.
- **Gioia** is at **Beta Tauri / Elnath** (134 ly), birthplace of Alberto Ginaztera, founder of House Ginaz. **Hagal** and **Shandor** are at **Theta Leonis** (Shaowei, 165 ly). Hagal is the "jewel planet," mined out by the time of Dune; the emperor's throne is a single block of Hagal quartz.
- **Ishia** is at "Beta Tygri," probably **Beta Lyncis** (some suggest 52 Cygni). It's a hot, arid Zensunni stop, the opposite of cold Rossak.
- **Chusuk** is at **Theta Arietis** (429 ly). It's the "Music Planet," home of Varota, maker of the baliset Gurney Halleck plays.
- **Canopus** (310 ly) is the second-brightest star in the sky after Sirius (8.6 ly). It's ~10,000× as luminous as the Sun and 71× as wide. Arrakis (planet III, with moons Krelln and Arvon) would be blasted hot and unlikely to have evolved life, though life could have been seeded.

### 15:54 Zensunni Wandering
- The Fremen story is one of persecution and survival, and their oral legends are probably inaccurate. Many believe they came from Poritrin, but all humans come from Earth. The Sayyadina's "Nilotic al-Ourouba" refers to the Nile valley (roughly "the Arabic Nile region").
- The Great Houses wanted Poritrin and split the Zensunni between **Salusa Secundus** (10 generations and ~800 years of suffering; Sardaukar conversion attempts failed; later moved to Ishia) and **Bela Tegeuse**, which was easier until a Sardaukar invasion split them again to **Rossak** and **Harmonthep**.
- In the end all of them were moved to **Arrakis**, where the Bene Gesserit's Missionaria Protectiva had planted the prophecy of the Lisan al-Gaib, "the Voice from the Outer World."

### 17:54 FTL Travel
- Folding space has no hard science behind it, so the creator compares how the adaptations show it:
- **2000 miniseries**: a bat-winged Navigator (a nod to *Dune Messiah*'s description) and a wormhole-like jump. Great costumes ("Samurai Firefighter").
- **1984 Dune** (David Lynch): the ship fades in at its destination.
- **2021 Dune** (Villeneuve): sandworm-like Heighliners fold space through their core for instant travel.
- There are two ways it could work. One is ships stationed at every planet acting as linked stargates, which would make Navigators unnecessary and break canon. The other is one ship existing in two places at once and "apparating." The creator closes with his own Heighliner fold sequence (model by Justin Pearson) from Delta Pavonis/Caladan to Canopus/Arrakis.
