# The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies.webp]] **Channel:** The Overview Effekt (@OverviewEffekt) | **Published:** Oct 7, 2025 | **Length:** 10:07 | [Watch on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZLbo6PE0bw) > The outline is built from the creator's English captions and chapters. Screenshots are 720p frames from the video. ## Outline ### 0:00 Mapping the galaxy - Opens on the Pillars of Creation and asks where famous objects actually sit in 3D space. Where are the closest pulsars, black holes and neutron stars? - Promises new (2024) data on the structure of the interstellar medium and a 3D version of the Voyager pulsar map. - Most full-galaxy pictures are educated guesses, since we live inside the disk. Dust clouds within a few thousand light-years, though, can be observed directly. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0020.webp]] ### 0:52 The interstellar medium - Space is full of dust and gas, especially in the galactic disk. The visualization is real 3D dust-density data around Earth. - The main **superclouds** are shown. The Solar System is wedged between the **Radcliffe Wave** and **the Split**. - The Split holds the **Aquila Rift**, known from the *Love, Death & Robots* episode based on Alastair Reynolds' story. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0112.webp]] ### 1:41 The Local Bubble - The Sun sits in the **Local Bubble**, a region about 1,000 light-years across. It is low in dust, not empty of stars (millions of stars are inside it). - One or more supernovae about 20 million years ago blew the dust outward. - Theo O'Neill's 2024 data shows the bubble opening into a **chimney**, with gas and dust venting out of the disk. This is an example of the galaxy-wide **baryon cycle**. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0150.webp]] - One of the closest dust clouds to Earth, the **Eos cloud** (about 300 ly), was identified last year. The video shows how it would look if it were visible in the night sky. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0244.webp]] ### 2:51 Nearby stellar remnants - The closest known **neutron star** is about 400 ly away, almost due "north" toward the galactic center. It is one of the X-ray-bright **Magnificent Seven** found in the 1990s. - Most neutron stars are dark, so closer ones probably exist. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0312.webp]] ### 3:25 Closest pulsars - **Pulsars** are spinning, strongly magnetized neutron stars that "pulse" as their poles sweep past us. The closest known pulsar is about 460 ly away, almost due east. - Pulsars were discovered in the late 1960s. Because they are so regular, 14 were used for the map on the **Pioneer and Voyager plaques**, so aliens could find Earth. - How to read the map: it is centered on Earth, and the long line points to the galactic core. The 2D projection doesn't map cleanly to 3D, so he rebuilds it in 3D with updated 2025 distances. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0420.webp]] - Caveats: pulsar spin rates drift over time. The probes won't leave our neighborhood for hundreds of thousands of years. Advanced aliens could just back-trace a probe's trajectory, which he teases as his next video. ### 5:06 Nearby nebulae - **Helix Nebula** ("Eye of Sauron"): the closest nebula, about 650 ly away and just under 6 ly across, so it is scaled up to be visible. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0512.webp]] - **Horsehead Nebula**: about 1,400 ly away in the **Orion complex** near the Orion Nebula. It appears upside down from this angle, so he flips the view. Nearby are Betelgeuse, Rigel and Bellatrix. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0540.webp]] - **Eagle Nebula** (Pillars of Creation) is in the opposite direction, toward the core. The **Cat's Eye Nebula** is to the west. The **Carina Nebula** is far to the east, about 16,000 ly. Most famous JWST images show objects in other galaxies. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0635.webp]] ### 6:28 Closest black holes - **Sagittarius A\***, the supermassive black hole at the galactic center, is about 27,000 ly away. - The former closest, **A0620-00**, sits behind Orion/Horsehead. **Gaia** data found **Gaia BH1** (about 1,500 ly), the closest known. He praises the sensible naming, but notes that BH3 is second closest and BH2 third. - **Cygnus X-1**, one of the most studied black holes, is about 7,000 ly away to the west. - All of these are binaries, found through a star orbiting them. Gravity is weak at distance, so closer isolated black holes likely remain undiscovered. ![[images/The Nearest Astronomical Anomalies-t0725.webp]] - Takeaway: almost everything hugs the very flat galactic plane. Even the dust rises only about 1,000 ly, which is why 2D "east/west/north/south" directions work. ### 8:25 Nebula streaming platform (sponsor) - Plug for Nebula: ad-free, early access, and Nebula originals (RealLifeLore's *Mad Kings*, *Amy's Dead End Dream House*, Neo's *Under Exposure* such as Raising the Titanic). Code gives 40% off annual (about $3/month) or $300 lifetime. ## Things Mentioned ### Stars and astronomical objects - Pillars of Creation / Eagle Nebula; Helix Nebula; Horsehead Nebula; Orion Nebula and the Orion complex; Cat's Eye Nebula; Carina Nebula - Betelgeuse, Rigel, Bellatrix - Radcliffe Wave, the Split, Aquila Rift, Eos cloud, Local Bubble (chimney) - The Magnificent Seven neutron stars; the closest known pulsar (about 460 ly) - Sagittarius A\*, A0620-00, Gaia BH1, Gaia BH2, Gaia BH3, Cygnus X-1 ### Spacecraft and missions - Pioneer 10/11 and Voyager 1/2 (pulsar-map plaques and the Golden Record cover) - Gaia (ESA astrometry mission) - James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) ### Physics concepts - Interstellar medium, 3D dust extinction mapping, superclouds - Supernova-blown bubbles, galactic chimneys, the baryon cycle - Neutron stars, pulsars (spin and magnetic fields, spin-down drift) - Stellar-mass black holes in binary systems; the weakness of gravity at distance - Thinness of the galactic disk ### Sci-fi works - *Love, Death & Robots*, "Beyond the Aquila Rift" (story by Alastair Reynolds) - "Eye of Sauron" nickname (*The Lord of the Rings*) - Mass Effect-style music by @MrHulthen ### Sources and tools - Edenhofer et al.
