## Outline
### 0:00 New Project
- **0:01** Fred opens with the usual Dubai checklist — megaproject, ~**$20BN** price tag — then the punchline: not another island, a **sewer**.
- **0:23** The “blingiest city on earth” has a plumbing problem spilling into the streets; the emirate is funding a megaproject you will not see on a tourism brochure (and would not park a Ferrari next to).
- **0:52** Cut to the **noughties** and the infamous tanker convoy nicknamed the **“Dubai poop snake.”**

### 0:53 The Poop Snake
- **1:03** The “poop snake” is framed as the less glamorous side of Dubai’s crowning achievement. **2010**: **Burj Khalifa** completion puts the city on the global stage and kicks off a “more is more” boom.
- **1:40** Urban legend: the tower was not connected to the sewer and needed constant tankers. Reality is only slightly better — the Burj **was** plumbed in, but the **downtown core** network was already over capacity; thousands of sewage trucks still hauled “unwanted deliveries” until capacity caught up.
- **2:15** Today the Burj uses a sophisticated on-site treatment loop that cleans waste and returns water through the ground-level **fountains**. The rest of the city did not clean up as neatly.
- **2:32** **Palm Jumeirah**: exclusive real estate, same pong. **2018**: raw sewage flows onto the eastern crescent road from an overloaded **temporary treatment plant**; an eyewitness describes months of smell and sewage on the road and construction boards.
- **3:07** **2019**: Palm residents report chronic plumbing issues, blocked sewers, and broken water supply.
- **3:19** **2024**: heaviest UAE rains on record; flash floods turn roads into rivers and flood **Dubai International Airport** tarmac; reports of sewage mixing with floodwater across the emirates.
- **3:47** **2023**: Dubai’s **Executive Council** approves the **Dubai Strategic Sewerage Tunnels** — a century-scale modern sewer built as **two deep-level tunnels**.

### 4:08 The Solution
- **4:08** Larger tunnel: **~50 km** through **Bur Dubai**, Downtown, and the southern growth corridor; fed by a **~10 km** link-pipe network; diameter grows from **3.5 m** to **6.5 m** along the run.
- **4:36** Gravity does the work: tunnel drops to about **90 m** depth so waste flows downhill to a new terminal pumping station at **Jebel Ali**, then a final lift into treatment for cleaning and reuse.
- **5:00** Second tunnel: **~25 km** serving **Deira** (airport + historic souks), from **Palm Deira** to a new facility at **Al Warsan**.
- **5:16** Four construction phases; first contracts signed **2025**; no official completion date, expected early **2030s**. On-camera cost: about **USD $21.8BN** (title/companion round to **$22BN**) — “Rolls Royce of sewers.”
- **5:41** Sponsor break: **Brilliant** (probability / Monte Carlo gag → learning platform CTA; free **30 days** via brilliant.org/TheB1M; **20%** off annual for B1M viewers).
- **7:11** Design parallel: London’s **Thames Tideway Tunnel** (opened **2025**) — **25 km** west–east, **>60 m** deep. Dubai’s completed system is expected to replace much of the existing network, lift wastewater capacity by **700%**, and handle **>20 million m³/day**. Companion adds **~140 km** of supporting tunnels and replacing **>100** of today’s pump stations.

### 7:30 How Did We Get Here?
- **7:43** Why so late, and what exists now? Rewind to early **2000s**: Burj as one spectacle among many to remake a trading post into a global destination and cut oil dependence — and it worked.
- **8:15** From **2008**, population **more than doubled** in **11 years**; **2003–2023** economy **quadrupled**. Lavish above-ground growth; below-ground systems lag.
- **8:42** Side effects: power cuts, motorways that isolate neighbourhoods (“urban planner’s vision of hell”), and sewer stress.
- **8:57** Mid-video book promo: Fred’s **Mega Builds: 10 Colossal Construction Projects That Will Change Our World** (Penguin Random House; pre-order CTA).
- **10:33** Mid-noughties reality: **>1,200 km** of sewer pipes, but only as small **localised / ad hoc** networks — not a citywide strategy.

### 10:54 Sub Optimal
- **10:54** Instead of gravity, Dubai relied on **>150 pumping stations** — energy-hungry and maintenance-heavy. Today those pumps account for about **30%** of the city’s **carbon emissions**.
- **11:16** When a station fails (as Palm residents learned), consequences appear fast. Tankers fill gaps: in **2013**, **30%** of waste arriving at the **Jebel Ali** treatment plant came by road — the “poop snake” returns.
- **11:44** Queues of up to **24 hours**; some drivers dump illegally. Seafront hotels and beaches close when overflow clogs the shoreline.

### 12:23 Growing Pains
- **12:23** Fred pushes back on a pure vanity-project critique: mid-noughties-to-now growth was faster than anyone planned for — hard to build a coherent network when the five-year future is unknown.
- **12:52** Tideway is an **overflow** add-on to London’s Victorian network (**1865**). In the **1850s** London faced a similar boom; the **Great Stink** of **1858** forced Parliament to act (lime chloride on Westminster curtains). **Joseph Bazalgette**’s sewers over the next ~**six years** became a civic turning point. Companion: Dubai’s main tunnels will be **three times** Tideway’s length.

### 13:48 The Future
- **13:52** Beyond sewers: **2021**, ruler **Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum** unveils **Dubai 2040** — rewiring a “builder’s yard with Bugattis” into a planned metropolis.
- **14:06** Five new city centres (three redeveloped, two greenfield) with walkable amenities; **USD $680M** for **8 million m²** of green pedestrian/cycle corridors; metro expansion so **half** the city sits within **800 m** of a station.
- **14:41** Close: Strategic Sewerage Tunnels are not glamorous, but they are the underground work that makes above-ground spectacle possible — unsung heroes of infrastructure. Brilliant sponsor wrap + subscribe CTA (“push that flush butt…”).

## Biographies
### Fred Mills
Founder and on-camera host of **The B1M**. Narrates Dubai’s sewage crises from the Burj-era “poop snake” through Palm spills and the **2024** floods, walks through the Strategic Sewerage Tunnels design (Bur Dubai / Deira gravity lines), runs the **Brilliant** sponsor segment and **Mega Builds** book promo, and frames the project against Bazalgette, Tideway, and **Dubai 2040**.
### Ian Parkin
Author of The B1M companion article *[Dubai Has a Sewage Problem](https://theb1m.com/video/dubai-has-a-sewage-problem)* (13 May 2026), used to cross-check tunnel lengths and supporting-network figures, **$22BN** cost rounding, pump-station counts, **700%** capacity claim, PPP/tender timing, and Bazalgette / Tideway comparisons for this note.
### Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Ruler of Dubai; in **2021** unveiled the **Dubai 2040** plan cited in the video’s closing section — five city centres, green corridors, and metro catchments meant to remake Dubai from car-and-motorway sprawl into a walkable, planned metropolis alongside the sewer megaproject.
### Joseph Bazalgette
Victorian civil engineer whose London sewer network (built after the **1858** Great Stink; system opened **1865**) is Fred’s historical parallel for Dubai: a growth city forced to invest in unglamorous underground infrastructure that then enables the city above.
