# Obsidian - Fantasy Content Generator ![[images/Obsidian-Fantasy-Content-Generator.webp]] [Watch on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B82cuaRh5ZQ) · 8:26 · Josh Plunkett · 2023-04-07 > Written from the video's English automatic captions (fetched with youtube-transcript-api after yt-dlp's subtitle request hit a 429), with the creator's chapter list as section anchors. ## Outline ### 00:00 Intro and installation - A look at a new TTRPG plugin "that has hit the market": **Fantasy Content Generator**, built to produce random content inside your notes for tabletop games. - Install: Settings → **Community plugins** → Browse → search "fantasy" → **Fantasy Content Generator** → Install → Enable. - While you're on the plugin page, read its description, because it includes instructions. "It is really quite simple." ![[images/Obsidian-Fantasy-Content-Generator-t0045.webp]] *The Community plugins browser filtered on "fantasy": Fantasy Calendar and Fantasy Statblocks (both by Jeremy Valentine) above Fantasy Content Generator by Gregory-Jagermeister (version 1.2.2, 320 downloads), whose page credits the Snake4life fantasy-names project and the Fantasy Name Generator and Fantasy Content Generator npm packages.* ### 01:03 Button trigger demo - He starts with a note the plugin already filled: an inn "hidden away in the forgotten corner of the world, surrounded by ancient ruins and mysterious artifacts", plus rumors and people inside. It's "just enough content to whip up an inn nice and quickly." - After install a new **Fantasy Generators** ribbon icon appears. It opens a simple **"Lets Generate!"** window with a dropdown of every generator in the plugin. ![[images/Obsidian-Fantasy-Content-Generator-t0147.webp]] *The "Select a Generator to Start" dropdown, grouped into sections: Objects and Vehicles (Airships, Drinks, Artifacts, Loot And Treasure, Metals, Magical Trees, Ship), Groups and Religions (Animal Groups, Groups, Religion), and Races (Aasimars, Catfolk, Fetchlings, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Hobgoblin, Ifrits, and more).* - **Inns and Taverns**: amount 5 → **Generate** → **Copy**. His first click on Copy did nothing ("had to test it live on my video, of course"), and the second try worked. Copy puts the results on the clipboard, and he pastes them into the note. - With a little formatting you have five inns to offer players entering a town: give them the names first, the descriptions when they get closer, and the rumors and patrons once they walk in. - **Dungeons**: short descriptions such as ruins in a long-forgotten temple "protected by powerful enchantments". Simple but useful. - Other generators he scrolls through: **settlement names**, **objects and vehicles** such as **drinks**, **loot and treasure**, **ships**, and **trees**. ![[images/Obsidian-Fantasy-Content-Generator-t0325.webp]] *Loot And Treasure results in the Lets Generate! window: "a shiny healing potion, a broken feather", "an ancient tome, an ancient healing potion", and other mixes of mundane and magic items, each with Generate and Copy buttons.* - "Everyone always needs a loot generator." The loot mixes mundane items (a broken feather) with magical ones. He'd personally use **Loot and Treasure** and **Inns and Taverns** the most, and he likes **Groups and Religions** for sect and cult names. There are also **animal groups**. - The **Races** section works as a name generator: handy when the party meets an NPC on the street and you need a name fast. Generate, then paste into a note. - "It's not an advanced plugin." It does one job cleanly. #### Customizing the lists - Settings → Community plugins → Fantasy Content Generator → options. Each generator's word lists can be modified. - Inns, for example, have **Prefixes**, **Types**, and **Nouns** lists, each with a **New Addition** box and an **Add** button. Click "remove" on any entry to drop it. ![[images/Obsidian-Fantasy-Content-Generator-t0512.webp]] *The plugin's settings: Import / Export (Choose Import File, Export Section To File), then the "Prefixes being used", "Type's being used", and "Nouns being used" lists for inns, each with a New Addition field and an Add button.* - He adds **"the smelly"** as a new prefix. It's now available for generated inn names and is just as easy to remove later. - **Loot settings** let you add your own items with an item name and weight, and you can **import and export** lists as files, so you could bring in your own treasure. #### Inline @ trigger - You don't have to use the ribbon button. Typing the **@** symbol anywhere in a note opens a prompt listing the available generators. - He picks **make me a trading post** and gets a full block: name, origin, speciality, age, condition, visitor traffic, size, environment, population, disposition, law enforcement, leadership, wealth, crime, shops, and services. ![[images/Obsidian-Fantasy-Content-Generator-t0620.webp]] *An inline-generated trading post: Cuomicburn, native origin, speciality "Atypical Shipping Methods", Ancient, Immaculate, Very Large, Tundra, Unfriendly to visitors, Local Watch and Local Council, Affluent, plus a shop list (3 bakers, a weaver, magic shops, a shipwright, a butcher, a smithy, a cobbler) and services (hired help, an inn, a doctor/apothecary, a stable, barbers, guides and trackers, taverns, a bathhouse).* - The inline list seems to include more detailed options than the ribbon menu. - The trigger key can be changed: the **inline generator callout key** is set in the plugin's settings. ### 07:21 Verdict - He recommends it to anyone who needs a random generator and wants it simple. He usually uses the **Inline Scripts** plugin, which is far more advanced, but many people struggle to set it up and understand the code behind it. - Fantasy Content Generator is for people who "just want five inns and they need it now." ### 07:55 Outro - A nice new addition to the TTRPG plugin repository. Let him know if you find anything fun in it. - A quick, short one. He hopes viewers are enjoying the long weekend if they're celebrating it. ## Things mentioned ### Obsidian plugins and features - **Fantasy Content Generator** (community plugin by Gregory-Jagermeister, v1.2.2 at recording): Fantasy Generators ribbon icon, Lets Generate! window with Generate and Copy, inline **@** trigger with a configurable callout key, editable lists (prefixes, types, nouns, loot items with weights), JSON import and export - **Inline Scripts** (his usual, more advanced random-generator plugin) - **Fantasy Calendar** and **Fantasy Statblocks** (by Jeremy Valentine, visible in the plugin search) - Core: Community plugins browser, plugin settings ### Generators shown - Inns and Taverns (names, descriptions, rumors, patrons), Dungeons, Settlement names, Trading Post (inline) - Objects and Vehicles: Airships, Drinks, Artifacts, Loot And Treasure, Metals, Magical Trees, Ship - Groups and Religions: Animal Groups, Groups (sects and cults), Religion - Races (name generators): Aasimars, Catfolk, Fetchlings, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Hobgoblin, Ifrits, and others - Generated examples: a hidden inn among ancient ruins, a long-forgotten temple dungeon, loot such as a shiny healing potion and a broken feather, the trading post Cuomicburn, and his custom inn prefix "the smelly" ### Credited resources (from the plugin page) - Snake4life's **fantasy-names** project on GitHub - **Fantasy Name Generator** and **Fantasy Content Generator** npm packages ### Links - [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/) - [Official Obsidian Discord](https://discord.gg/obsidianmd) - [Obsidian TTRPG Users Facebook group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/obsidianttrpgusers) - [Josh's Patreon](https://www.patreon.com/JPlunkett) ### Free vs paid (quick) - Free: Obsidian, Fantasy Content Generator, Inline Scripts - Paid: Josh's Patreon (tutorial files, private Discord, training vault) ## Bios - **Josh Plunkett**: Australian GM and educator behind Obsidian TTRPG Tutorials (YouTube, Patreon, Discord).
