Ah, Stream Deck—that makes much more sense!
Because the Microsoft Store/MSIX version of Claude Desktop uses a sandboxed protocol, Elgato’s standard "Open" action usually can't find a traditional `.exe` file.
The easiest and most reliable way to launch Claude from your Stream Deck is by using its official Windows App Execution Alias. This bypasses the need to dig through hidden system folders.
## Method 1: Use the Windows Run Command (Easiest)
Instead of linking directly to a file path, you can tell your Stream Deck to trigger the Windows launch command.
1. Open your Stream Deck Application.
2. From the right-hand panel, drag the System: Open action onto an empty key.
3. In the App / File text box, paste the following exact command:
```text
cmd.exe /c start claude://
```
4. _Optional:_ Change the title to "Claude" and set a custom icon.
## Method 2: Create a Desktop Shortcut First
If the command above doesn't work with your specific Stream Deck firmware version, you can create a standard Windows shortcut on your desktop and point the Stream Deck to that shortcut.
1. Right-click on an empty space on your Windows desktop.
2. Select New > Shortcut.
3. In the location box, type: `claude://` and click Next.
4. Name the shortcut `Claude` and click Finish.
5. Open your Stream Deck Application and drag a System: Open action to a key.
6. Click the choose button next to App / File and select the Claude shortcut you just created on your desktop.
Did one of these methods get the launch button working for you, or would you like help finding a high-quality Claude icon to complete your Stream Deck key setup?
---
> both methods work to launch the app. but, they do not grab the icon. where does the icon live on disk?
---
Because Claude Desktop is distributed as a packaged Windows app (MSIX), the application assets—including its high-resolution icons—are stored inside the protected and hidden WindowsApps system folder. [1, 2]
## Where the Icons Live on Disk
You can find the official `.png` and `.ico` files here: [3]
```text
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Claude_1.7196.1.0_x64__pzs8sxrjxfjjc\app\assets\
```
_(Note: The exact version numbers `1.7196.1.0` in that folder name may change slightly depending on the latest update)._ [2]
## ⚠️ The Problem with the WindowsApps Folder
Windows heavily locks down `C:\Program Files\WindowsApps`. Even if you are an administrator, if you try to browse to it or point Elgato Stream Deck directly to that path, Windows will usually block access, causing the icon to stay blank or error out.
## The Easy Workaround
The easiest way to get the icon onto your Stream Deck is to pull it from the app's local user cache (which isn't permission-locked) or download it directly.
1. Check the Local Cache:
Open File Explorer and paste this path into the address bar to see if a cached version is available:
`%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Claude_pzs8sxrjxfjjc\LocalCache\Roaming\Claude\` [4]
2. The "Snipping Tool" Shortcut (Fastest):
- Open the Claude app on your desktop.
- Use the Windows Snipping Tool (`Win + Shift + S`) to take a clean, square screenshot of the Claude icon.
- Save it as a `.png` file to your Documents or Pictures folder.
3. Apply it to Stream Deck:
- Open the Stream Deck software.
- Click on your Claude action button.
- Click the down-arrow / dropdown on the icon preview tile in the bottom-left corner of the software panel.
- Select Set from File and choose your saved image.
Were you able to find the assets folder, or would you like a direct web link to a clean, high-resolution Claude icon PNG that you can right-click and save directly?
