# 2. Quest 2 SDK Stack
Part of [[Meta Quest 2]]. Requires Unity 6.3 LTS (6000.3.27f2) and newer. Previous: [[1.Quest 2 Support Status]]. Next: [[3.Quest 2 Project and Build Setup]].
> [!important] Version requirement
> Unity 6.3 LTS (6000.3.27f2) and newer.
You can reach a Quest 2 through three layers that overlap. Pick one primary path, and add the others only for a feature you need.
## 2.1 The layers
| Layer | Packages | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| **OpenXR (Unity)** | `com.unity.xr.openxr`, `com.unity.xr.meta-openxr` (Unity OpenXR: Meta) | The runtime connection, controller profiles, Meta Quest Support (foveation, ASW, passthrough camera, etc.) |
| **XR Interaction Toolkit (XRI) 3.x** | `com.unity.xr.interaction.toolkit` | XR Origin rig, ray/poke/grab interactors, teleport, XR UI input, UI Toolkit world-space support |
| **Meta XR SDK** | `com.meta.xr.sdk.all` (All-in-One) or individual packages: Core, Interaction SDK (ISDK), Building Blocks, Project Setup Tool | Meta-specific features: Interaction SDK, OVRManager, passthrough layers, Building Blocks, Meta XR Simulator integration |
Unity 6000.3 documents Meta Quest development around OpenXR and the **Unity OpenXR: Meta** package ([Develop for Meta Quest](https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.3/Documentation/Manual/xr-meta-quest-packages.html)). The **Oculus XR Plugin is deprecated** from Unity 6.5 onward per Unity's 6000.5 docs (I did not see it stated on the 6000.3 page); do not start new work on it either way.
## 2.2 Versions listed for Unity 6000.3
From Unity's 6000.3 package pages at the time of writing (Package Manager decides what you actually get; newer versions listed as released can be picked in its version list):
| Package | Version Unity lists as released for 6000.3 | Newer versions also listed as released | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenXR Plugin | 1.16.1 | 1.17.x, 1.18.0, 1.19.0 | [OpenXR Plugin](https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.3/Documentation/Manual/com.unity.xr.openxr.html) |
| Unity OpenXR: Meta | 2.7.0 | none newer (2.3 to 2.6 also available) | [Unity OpenXR: Meta](https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.3/Documentation/Manual/com.unity.xr.meta-openxr.html) |
| XR Interaction Toolkit | 3.3.2 | 3.4.0 to 3.7.0 (3.5.1 listed) | [XRI](https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.3/Documentation/Manual/com.unity.xr.interaction.toolkit.html) |
| XR Hands | 1.7.3 | 1.8.1, 1.9.0, 1.10.0 | [XR Hands](https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.3/Documentation/Manual/com.unity.xr.hands.html) |
This series uses **XRI 3.4.0 or newer** (the UI Toolkit ray support in [[7.Quest 2 Worked Example Room]] needs it) and **XR Hands 1.8.1 or newer** ([[6.Quest 2 Input Hands and Passthrough]]). Pick them in Package Manager's version list; the other two packages can stay on the default.
Meta's own packages are versioned separately. Meta XR Core SDK was **v207.0 on 2026-09-22** ([Meta release notes](https://developers.meta.com/horizon/downloads/package/meta-xr-core-sdk/)) and v203 on the Asset Store on 2026-06-10. Meta's last SDK supporting Quest 2 is v213 ([[1.Quest 2 Support Status]]).
## 2.3 Which path should you choose?
| If you need... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Portable code across headsets, standard rig, UI Toolkit world-space UI | **OpenXR + XRI 3.x + Unity OpenXR: Meta** (this tutorial's path) |
| Meta's hand/controller interaction library (Interaction SDK), Building Blocks, passthrough layers, Meta-specific tooling | **Meta XR SDK** (Core + ISDK). ISDK can sit on a Unity XR rig; Meta documents this at [ISDK with Unity XR](https://developers.meta.com/horizon/documentation/unity/unity-isdk-getting-started-unityxr/) |
| Both | Possible, but pick **one** owner for each concern: one rig, one interaction system per hand, one passthrough provider |
> [!tip] Why this tutorial uses XRI
> XRI's UI Toolkit support is documented and ships in the package: [[8.UI Toolkit for VR]]. Meta's ISDK UI integration is documented for uGUI canvases only (see that note), so a UI Toolkit panel with ISDK needs the render-texture fallback.
## 2.4 Meta XR SDK pieces, briefly
| Piece | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Core SDK | `OVRManager`, `OVRPlugin`, passthrough, display frequency | Needed for the Meta passthrough layer and OVR APIs |
| All-in-One (`com.meta.xr.sdk.all`) | Meta meta-package including ISDK, Platform, etc. | Heavier; adds many dependencies |
| Interaction SDK | Hand/controller grab, poke, ray, with Meta's rig | uGUI via `PointableCanvas` |
| Building Blocks | Drag-in features (camera rig, passthrough, hand tracking) | Menu under the Meta XR SDK toolbar |
| Project Setup Tool | Checks and fixes project settings | Menu path in docs: Window > Meta > Tools > Project Setup Tool; the SDK v207 release notes describe a Meta XR SDK toolbar (Window > Meta > Meta XR SDK). Menu names have changed between releases **(verify in your install)** |
| Meta XR Simulator | Test without a headset | See [[4.Quest 2 Testing and Deployment]] |
Install via Package Manager (from the Meta docs: add by name, e.g. `com.meta.xr.sdk.all`) or from the Asset Store. Meta says the Core SDK on the Asset Store needs Unity 6000.0.66f2 or later, and the release notes for v83.0.4 (2026-02-02) mention a compile fix for Unity 6.5 (not relevant to 6.3). The Interaction SDK 207.0 notes say compile errors on Unity 6.3 and later were fixed by gating the use of `GetInstanceID`; I did not compile a Meta SDK project on 6000.3.
## 2.5 Rules of thumb
1. One rig only. Do not put an `OVRCameraRig` and an XRI `XR Origin` in the same scene.
2. One XR plugin provider. Use OpenXR; turn off the Oculus provider ([[9.Quest 2 Pitfalls]]).
3. Feature-test on a **Quest 2**, not just Quest 3. The Meta docs mark several features as Quest 3-only (for example full color passthrough, depth, scene mesh), see [[6.Quest 2 Input Hands and Passthrough]].
