Every time you call one of these a "farm," you are playing into propaganda that foreign renewable corporations and their US politician mouthpieces spent billions of dollars on pushing to "dumb" rural Americans (that's what they think of you). A lot of careful strategizing and more money than you can comprehend was spent on coming up with the marketing angle of calling this a farm. Here is the universal definition of a farm: "an area of land and its buildings used for growing crops and rearing animals, typically under the control of one owner or manager." Before someone goes, "but Alex, agrovoltaics! They could graze animals!" We "could" all do a lot of things. The REALITY is that not ONE solar complex I have visited in New York State has farming occurring at it. I have been to 30+ complexes. Do you know why? 1) The solar companies want to install the complexes as quickly as possible, with out of state temporary labor that pulls out when the final panel is mounted. They are after green energy subsidies and credits. They make millions off setting up these industrial complexes. 2) Solar fields have exposed wires, high voltage, herbicide application, and plenty of other dangerous traps that would make grazing animals inside of them animal abuse. 3) You can't grow food next to these PFAS-coated panels. Potato growing associations nationwide, as well as famous chip companies, will not farm land that held solar panels. Why? Glass shards, microplastics, PFAS, cadmium, and lead end up in the ground over time. Or, one good tornado, hurricane, or hail storm causes soil destruction in a single evening. This isn't a farm. This is an INDUSTRIAL complex. Look at the photos. Perimeter fencing, thousands upon thousands of panels mounted from China, made with fossil fuels, on compacted soil that'll never be farmed again... is not a farm. And everyone knows it. This is an industrial complex, an ecological detention center, a money grift for green energy companies, and the end of America's pastoral history if everyone doesn't awaken from your stupor. People are afraid to comment on anything that may offend a farmer. Farmers are the backbone of this country and it's the politicians' fault they can't afford to work today. But two things can be true. We can have empathy for farmers and also acknowledge the biggest wealth transfer of our lifetimes is occurring right in front of us. Generational farmland is transferring to foreign corporations under the guise of "farming." This is NOT farming and everyone knows it. When foreign corporations get to depart from the zoning everyone else in this area had to follow, property values plummet, neighbors fight, and agricultural districts and distinctions lose their standing.
