# Berlin School Sequence and Space Case: **Eurorack 001 Installed** (main rack). Each module is used once. Sources: [Learning Modular, The 9 Albums Challenge](https://www.patreon.com/LearningModular/posts/9-albums-172310290) · [Moritz Klein, Reverb + Breadboard](https://www.patreon.com/moritzklein/posts/reverb-nervous-173192475) Moritz's reverb is an analog BBD circuit and Beads is a digital texture synthesizer, so this patch is a nod to his work, not a copy. ## Modules - Moog Mother-32: the metronomic ostinato voice, using its own sequencer - Mutable Instruments Rings: the second, looser voice. It strums itself on each note change, per its manual. - Expert Sleepers Disting mk4 (#1): **B-1 Sample and Hold**, giving random pitches - Expert Sleepers Disting mk4 Special Edition (#2): **A-6 Quantizer** - Mutable Instruments Beads: space (reverb plus delay) - Ladik A-540: stereo balanced output ## Cables 1. Mother-32 VCA (out) -> Beads left audio input (input (1) in the manual; panel label unsure, check panel) 2. Disting #1 B (out, noise) -> Disting #1 X (in) 3. Mother-32 LFO SQ (out) -> Disting #1 Y (in). The LFO is not synced to the sequencer, so Rings changes notes at a rate unrelated to the ostinato. 4. Disting #1 A (out) -> Disting #2 X (in) 5. Disting #2 A (out, quantized pitch) -> Rings V/OCT (in). With STRUM unpatched, Rings starts a note on each pitch change. 6. Rings ODD or EVEN (out; with one jack patched, both signals are mixed) -> Beads right audio input (input (1); panel label unsure, check panel) 7. Beads L (out) -> A-540 left input (jack label unsure, check panel) 8. Beads R (out) -> A-540 right input (jack label unsure, check panel) ## Starting points - **Mother-32:** - Sequence: a 16-step ostinato in one key with no swing. - Sound: saw wave, CUTOFF around 1 o'clock, a little resonance, short EG decay. - LFO RATE slow, about one cycle every 2 to 4 bars. - **Disting #1 (B-1):** set parameter 4 (Atten B) low, for example 3 or 4. The noise is ±8 V at maximum, which would cover too many octaves. Z (slew) at minimum keeps the notes stepped. - **Disting #2 (A-6):** use Z to pick a scale that fits the Mother-32 sequence, such as minor. - **Rings:** - Modal resonator, polyphony set to 2 so the notes overlap. - STRUCTURE at 11 o'clock, BRIGHTNESS at 10 o'clock, DAMPING at 2 o'clock. - Use the FREQUENCY knob to put Rings an octave or two above the Mother-32. - **Beads:** - The input gain sets itself automatically when you plug in. - DRY/WET [K] at 1 o'clock, REVERB [L] at 2 o'clock, FEEDBACK [J] at 10 o'clock. - For a delay as well: SIZE [G] fully CW (∞) turns Beads into a delay. Latch SEED with a 4-second hold and set the delay time with DENSITY. For a delay locked to the tempo, patch Mother-32 ASSIGN (the sequencer clock by default) into the Beads SEED input (4). ## What it should sound like A steady, hypnotic Mother-32 sequence in the spirit of Schulze's "Crystal Lake." Above it, Rings plays bell-like notes out of step with the sequence, like a hand-played melody over a metronome (the Hoenig idea). Both voices sit in a wide wash of reverb and delay from Beads.
