# Showcase Piece — Plan / Rough Cut — 5 points **Due: Week 12 — Friday, November 13** **Submit: rough cut (unlisted link) + shot list PDF in Canvas** --- ## What a showcase piece is One artifact that shows your work **moving or running**, in the form appropriate to your target role. Choose your track: ### Animation / VFX / Motion track — a reel - **60 to 90 seconds.** Not two minutes. Not three. - **Best shot inside the first eight seconds.** Assume they stop watching at fifteen. - Title card under three seconds: name, role, contact. End card: the same. - Music optional and quiet. **Many reviewers watch muted**, so nothing can depend on audio. - No shot appears twice. No shot you can't defend. ### Game art track — turntables, captures, or a build - Turntables with clean lighting, a wireframe pass, and texture breakdowns - Or in-engine capture showing the asset in context - Or a playable build on itch.io - **The rule from the hiring side: if they can't see it working within about three minutes of opening your page, it doesn't count.** A downloadable build with a five-minute install loses to a thirty-second capture. Not sure which track? Ask at your Week 11 conference. Some of you should do both. ## The shot list — required, both tracks A one-page PDF. Every shot or asset, in order: | # | Timecode | What it is | **My specific role** | Software | Personal or coursework | |---|---|---|---|---|---| This document does two things. It tells a reviewer exactly what you did, which protects you from the assumption that you did everything or nothing. And it forces you to look at your own reel and notice that shot 6 is one you can't actually take credit for. ## What "rough cut" means at this milestone Assembled, in order, correct length, with real timing. Placeholder renders are acceptable. Missing shots are acceptable if the shot list says what's going there. What's **not** acceptable: a folder of clips, or a plan with no cut. ## Common failures - Two minutes long — cut it to ninety seconds and it gets better, every time - Slow build to the best shot, which nobody reaches - A title card with a logo you designed, eating six seconds - Shots you can't defend when asked "what part was yours?" - Music mixed so loud the reviewer mutes it and loses your sound design too - Compression artifacts from exporting at the wrong bitrate ## Rubric | Standard | Points | | ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ------ | | Track chosen appropriately for the stated target role | 1 | | Rough cut assembled, in order, at correct length with real timing | 1 | | Strongest material in the first eight seconds | 1 | | Shot list complete, with honest per-shot role attribution | 1 | | Delivered as a working unlisted link, playable on my machine | 1 | ## Related - Week 10 page — the showcase piece session - **Showcase Piece — Final** (Week 15) - Glossary: *reel, turntable, in-engine capture, shot list, playable build*
