--- > Playa restoration volunteer --- There are **two different cleanups**. Only one is “Playa Restoration,” and it is not a walk-on after Temple night. --- ### 1. Citizen cleanup (what most people can actually do) Starts **final Sunday** of the event and runs through a few days after Labor Day. Everyone is asked to MOOP their own camp to the grain, then give **two hours** on open playa before leaving. From **Sunday through Monday/early Tuesday** you can also join organized sweeps: - Daily **8:00 a.m.** meeting at the **DPW Depot** (ask Playa Info for the pin) - Bring gloves, hat, water, and a jug with a 3″ hole cut in the top for nails and glass - A pickup helps; a CR-V does not After **Tuesday following Labor Day**, the permit says the public is gone. Only the official Restoration crew may stay. **How to sign up for this layer:** Burner Profile → Volunteer Questionnaire → check **DPW** and write **Clean Up**. Or email `[email protected]`. On playa, just show up at 8 a.m. This fits a **7–9 day** stay: Man, Temple, camp strike, two mornings of line sweeps, then Exodus. --- ### 2. Official DPW Playa Restoration (the real “Resto”) This is a **selected crew**, not a vibe. They do line sweeps, magnet passes, burn-scar work, highway MOOP, and the grid until BLM’s post-event inspection can pass. That inspection is why the event still gets a permit. **When it runs:** last phase of DPW season. Typically **just over two weeks**, landing in **late September into the first week of October**. Paid/staffed Resto jobs posted for 2026 were **September–October**, based out of the desert with staging in Gerlach / Black Rock Station. **What they give selected crew:** three meals, water/electrolytes, laundry access, a place to live (often shared housing or your own tent/trailer in Gerlach), bus out to the playa in the morning and back at evening. Two weeks usually earns the DPW shirt. Workdays are long, on your feet, weather-dependent; Sunday is often the off day. **How you get on it** | Path | Who it is for | |---|---| | Email `[email protected]` and put your name in | Anyone asking for Resto specifically | | DPW mailing list (Aug–Feb), then **DPW application ~March–July** | Full DPW pipeline; more spots than cold Resto email | | Paid listings on Burning Man’s job board (Crew, Responder, drivers) | Jobs with deadlines; some want prior Resto or CDL | | Already on DPW during the event | Easiest internal path onto Resto | They get **more applications than seats**. First-year participants are not the default pick. Showing up dusty on Tuesday and asking to “stay for restoration” usually gets you pointed at Exodus, not a bunk in Gerlach. --- ### What this does to your 2027 calendar **If you only do citizen cleanup** Leave Frisco late August as planned, stay through Temple (**Sun Sep 5, 2027**), sweep **Mon–Tue Sep 6–7**, roll toward Tonopah/Vegas **Tue or Wed**. That is still a normal CUV trip. **If you want official Resto** Treat it as a **second deployment**, not extra days on the same ticket: - Apply **March–June 2027** (or email Resto now and again in spring) - Expect to **leave BRC with everyone else**, then **come back mid/late September** if selected — or stay only if they explicitly roster you - Plan food, water, and the CR-V for Gerlach living, not open camping on the city grid (the city is gone) - Slide Vegas and the I-40 drive home to **early October** - Do not count on Resto to extend your event ticket or skip Exodus --- ### Practical choice for two people in a CR-V Do the **8 a.m. Depot sweeps** in 2027. That is real Leave No Trace and does not require a second month in Nevada. In parallel: create a Burner Profile, check DPW / Clean Up, and send a short note to `[email protected]` *and* `[email protected]` this winter so 2028 (or a 2027 late add if they have gaps) is possible. Resto is line-walking a dry lake for pay-grade hours after the party is over. If that sentence sounds like a good time, apply early.
