--- > Leave No Trace Principles --- Burning Man’s Leave No Trace is both a **culture principle** and a **BLM permit condition**. The outdoor-ethics version is the same idea with seven operational rules. On playa they stack. --- ### Burning Man’s principle (official) **Leaving No Trace** *Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.* It sits among the other nine: Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-Reliance, Radical Self-Expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Participation, Immediacy. LNT is the one that keeps the city allowed to return. There are **no public trash cans**. Pack it in, pack it out. “Better than we found it” on playa means: your camp is bare alkali, the street in front is clean, and you gave two extra hours to the commons. --- ### The seven Leave No Trace principles (outdoor ethics) These are the Leave No Trace Center’s framework. They apply in parks, at Lake Isabel, and on the Black Rock Desert. 1. **Plan ahead and prepare** 2. **Travel and camp on durable surfaces** 3. **Dispose of waste properly** 4. **Leave what you find** 5. **Minimize campfire impacts** 6. **Respect wildlife** 7. **Be considerate of other visitors** --- ### How those seven look in Black Rock City | LNT principle | On playa | |---|---| | **Plan ahead** | Pre-cycle packaging at home. Water, gray-water, and trash plan before you leave Frisco. Ticket + vehicle pass. Know Gate and Exodus rules. | | **Durable surfaces** | The playa *is* the durable surface — until you scar it, dump gray water, or leave a dune. Stay on streets at night; don’t cut new tracks in wet clay. | | **Dispose of waste** | Everything goes home: trash, recycling, ash, spilled playa in a bucket, unused food. Human waste and 1-ply only in portos. Gray water never on the ground. | | **Leave what you find** | No “playa souvenirs,” no digging random holes, no taking artifacts or bones. Leave the desert flat. | | **Minimize campfire** | Barrel **≥6″ off playa**, mesh lid, unpainted wood only, ash packed out. No ground fires. Art burns only with FAST + DG shield. | | **Respect wildlife** | Raven, kit fox, insects, cows on 447. Don’t feed them. Don’t leave food that trains them. | | **Consider others** | MOOP you miss becomes someone else’s tire puncture or Restoration week. Quiet generators at night. Lights on the bike. Secure the load so 447 is not your dump site. | Communal Effort and Civic Responsibility are why you also sweep **beyond your own footprint**. --- ### What “no physical trace” includes Not just bags of trash: - Micro MOOP: wood chips, butts, glitter, hair, zip ties, lag bolts - Conditions: burn scars, fuel stains, gray-water rings, camp dunes - Infrastructure: every stake counted out - Highway: nothing flying off the CR-V on Exodus The inspection standard Restoration works toward is roughly **under 1 ft² of debris per acre** at most sample points. Camps that fail that become red on the public MOOP map and threaten the permit. --- ### Practice in a two-person camp - Never let it hit the ground. - Daily 5–15 minute arms-width sweep. - Tarp under cutting and kitchen. - Magnet + rake + detector at strike. - Ash in a lidded metal can. - Two community hours after your own grid is white. - Leave the cabin at Lake Isabel the same way: pack out, no fire on soil, no glitter in the pines. Radical Self-Reliance is bringing the bags and the water.
