--- > Burn camp restoration protocols --- A “burn camp” is restored the same way a fire-art site is: **prevent the scar, contain the fire, pack the ash out, then line-sweep like the fire never happened.** Burning on bare playa is a permit violation; BLM can take the barrel. --- ### What you are allowed to burn in camp - **OF-2 only** for a normal camp: fire in a fireproof container — burn barrel, brazier, BBQ in a permitted camp area. - **Unpainted wood only.** Trash, painted lumber, plastics, and “mystery fuel” stay out. - Small paper/cardboard as kindling only, and only under a **wire-mesh lid** so embers do not fly. - Anything large goes to a **public Burn Garden / burn platform** on Esplanade, or home on the trailer. Do not invent an unsanctioned art burn. --- ### Setup protocol (scar prevention) 1. **Elevate the barrel at least 6 inches** off playa. That height is in the federal permit. Legs, bricks, or a steel stand — not a thin sheet that still cooks the clay. 2. Stake or weight the stand so wind does not dump coals. 3. Mesh cover on top. 4. **Shovel + lidded metal can** staged next to it from day one. Ash is MOOP and goes home. 5. Keep fuel cans in secondary containment, away from the barrel. 6. Fire extinguisher in reach. Someone sober is the fire watch whenever it is lit. 7. No ground fire, no “small ceremonial pit,” no coals raked onto playa “just for a minute.” That bakes a dark brick that lasts years and becomes a vehicle hazard. Flame heads and hot metal on art or mutant vehicles have the same **6-inch** standoff rule. --- ### During the burn - Tend it. Rake unburned chunks back into the heat so you are not left with half-charred 2×4s. - Do not let people throw bottles, batteries, synthetics, or sealed cans in. Those become toxic slag and glass in the ash. - If embers leave the barrel, drown and pick them **that night**, not in the morning wind. --- ### Shutdown and pack-out (camp barrel) Do this **the morning you are done with fire**, not during Exodus panic. 1. Let it go **cold**. No steam, no heat through a glove. Overnight if needed. 2. Shovel **all ash and charcoal** into the lidded metal can. Ash does not get dumped, buried, or “spread to disappear.” 3. Magnet-sweep the stand footprint and a 10–20 ft ring. Nails and bottle caps hide in the crust. 4. Landscape-rake the ring; pick charcoal **larger than a quarter**. 5. Lift the stand. Inspect the playa. It should be the same color as the rest of camp. 6. If you see a dark, hard, or puffy patch: that is a **burn scar**. Do not pretend a broom fixed it. 7. Line-sweep the kitchen/fire pad last, then the whole camp. Ash can rides home sealed. Do not put it in a contractor bag in the CR-V cabin; it sifts. Metal can in the hitch carrier or a sealed bin. --- ### If you actually burned art (not a barrel) That is a FAST job, not a camp DIY. - Pre-event burn plan + LNT lead. - **4-inch decomposed granite (DG)** shield under and beyond the footprint; deposit so Heavy Equipment will haul DG only after *your* crew cleans it. - Shield must catch a falling structure and flying debris. - Responsibility is the LNT grid: build site, wood shop, and typically **~50 ft beyond** the piece plus audience scatter. - Night crew stays with embers. Morning after: burn wood to nothing, pull all metal (avoid aluminum/stainless in the sculpture — they melt into un-magnetable blobs), magnet + rake, charcoal > quarter out, line-sweep until white, **then** call ASS/ARTery for checkout. DG is not removed until that inspection. Default for two people in a CR-V: **do not take this on.** Use Burn Gardens. --- ### If a scar already happened Prevention is the protocol. Restoration of a baked scar is DPW Special Forces work: pick glass and fasteners by hand, break the fire-hardened crust, often return **the next year after winter rain**. You cannot “rake it pretty” in an afternoon. If you caused one: - Cool and remove every ember and ash. - Magnet and rake the ring. - Cone it, GPS or map it, tell **Earth Guardians / DPW Depot / FAST**. - Do not drive over it and do not flood it with water (that can set a worse crust). A small discoloration under a legal 6-inch barrel after you pulled the ash is usually surface soot — sweep and inspect. A black, ringing-hard plate is a scar.
