# Project Hail Mary
*A novel by Andy Weir.*
> I read Wikipedia's articles on the novel and on Weir, the vault notes for the videos, and a blog post by Ashish Kumar Verma about the fuel calculations. I did not read the novel itself, so the summary follows the published plot description. I checked the video's relativity figures with my own calculation (section 6).

## 3. Author biography
Source: Wikipedia, Andy Weir.
- American novelist, born 16 June 1972 in Davis, California; grew up in Livermore. His father was a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and his mother an electrical engineer.
- Studied computer science at UC San Diego without graduating. Worked as a programmer for companies including AOL, Palm, MobileIron and Blizzard (where he worked on *Warcraft II*).
- Wrote the web comic *Casey and Andy* (2001-2008) and published fiction on his website. His first novel attempt, *Theft of Pride*, went unpublished. The 2009 short story "The Egg" was his first widely noticed work.
- *The Martian* began as a free web serial, then a 99-cent Kindle edition, then a Crown contract. He received the 2016 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. *Project Hail Mary* was a 2022 Hugo finalist.
## 4. Author interviews and talks
- [Andy Weir on David Perell's *How I Write*](https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/andy-weir-project-hail-mary-author-teaches-writing/id1700171470?i=1000792387666), 30 September 2026, about 1 hr 10 min (episode page loads; I read the published description and part of the transcript excerpt shown by search, not the whole interview). Covers how he builds science-fiction premises, plotting and the science.
- [Science Friday, "'Project Hail Mary' brings a new kind of alien to the big screen"](https://www.sciencefriday.com/segments/project-hail-mary-rocky-the-alien/), 20 March 2026: Weir and astrobiologist Mike Wong on Rocky's biology (page loads; segment transcript not read in full).
## 5. Summary
**Thesis.** A lone amnesiac scientist wakes aboard an interstellar ship and works out that he is humanity's last hope against a star-dimming microbe. The book combines survival engineering with a first-contact friendship (Wikipedia).
**Outline from the published plot description (no chapter list verified)**
1. Scientists find the Sun dimming and a "Petrova line" running from the Sun to Venus. Task-force head Eva Stratt recruits Ryland Grace, a junior-high science teacher with a molecular-biology PhD, who identifies the line as a single-celled organism he names Astrophage.
2. Astrophage has also dimmed nearby stars, but Tau Ceti is unaffected. The Hail Mary, fuelled by Astrophage, is built to go there. Both trained crewmates die before launch, and Stratt sedates Grace and sends him.
3. Grace wakes four years and eight months later, with amnesia and a dead crew, near Tau Ceti. An alien ship arrives from 40 Eridani. He and its eyeless, five-legged engineer, "Rocky", build a method of communication.
4. They find Tau Ceti has its own Petrova line, with a predator microbe, "Taumoeba". They collect it using a ten-kilometre xenonite chain. Taumoeba infiltrate the fuel lines, are killed by nitrogen flooding, and are selectively bred to survive both home environments.
5. Grace sends beetle probes toward Earth with Taumoeba and chooses to save Rocky's ship rather than return. Sixteen years later he lives on Erid as a teacher, and Rocky tells him the Sun has recovered.
**Key ideas.** Science as collaborative problem-solving across species; sacrifice under coercion; engineering constraints as plot. Reviewer Mary Robinette Kowal notes some problems could have been avoided with checklists and common sense (Wikipedia).
**Writing process.** After *The Martian*, Weir abandoned a 75,000-word space opera called *Zhek*, about an energy-absorbing fuel, and reused elements in this book (New York Times profile as reported by Wikipedia). He told Science Friday that Astrophage came from wanting a fuel that converts matter into energy and decided a biological one was the most believable (Wikipedia).
**Reception.** Debuted at No. 3 on the NYT combined print and e-book fiction list; 57 weeks on the list as of the week ending 11 July 2026; praised by Kirkus (starred) and Locus; recommended by Bill Gates and Barack Obama (Wikipedia).
## 6. Fact-check
Overall verdict: **supported**. The book facts and the video's physics check out. The one claim I could not verify is Weir's personal confirmation.
| Claim | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Tau Ceti is about 12 light-years away (video: 11.9) | Supported | Wikipedia's Tau Ceti article: just under 12 ly |
| The film's trip takes about four years; the book gives 4 years 8 months | Supported with a discrepancy | Wikipedia plot: four years and eight months; the video says the film's on-screen ETA is 4 y 2 mo 11 d |
| At 1.5 g constant acceleration, flip-and-burn to Tau Ceti takes about 4 years ship time | Supported | My calculation (11.9 ly, 1.5 g, flip at the midpoint): 3.89 years ship time, 13.1 years Earth time. This depends on the 1.5 g and distance values from the video |
| A 20:1 mass ratio is realistic for a flyby; stopping squares it to about 400:1 | Supported | For an ideal photon rocket my calculation gives 20.4:1 for the acceleration half and 415:1 for stopping; the blog quotes 416:1. The book's 2,000,000 kg Astrophage for a 100,000 kg ship is only stated by the video and blog |
| An 85% coast phase gets to Tau Ceti in about 6 y 8 mo | Supported | My calculation: 6.63 years ship time (rounding and assumptions explain the small gap), with a mass ratio of about 20.6:1 |
| The film's 4 y 2 mo timeline matches a 50% coast with a 124:1 mass ratio | Unverified | My calculation for coasting 50% of the distance gives 4.3 years but 41.6:1. The video's 124:1 may rest on a different definition of coast or efficiency, which I could not reproduce |
| Weir replied to the video creator and confirmed the stopping-mass error | Unverified | Reported by the blog author (a self-report); I found no independent confirmation |
| Sun infected by WISE 0855 via Sirius, Epsilon Eridani etc.; WISE 0855 is about 11 ly from Sirius | Unverified | I did not open catalogue sources for these distances, so I could not check them |
| The book is a major bestseller adapted to film | Supported | Wikipedia (NYT list, film 20 March 2026) |
| The book is a blockbuster comp to avoid in a query | Not empirically testable | Opinion |
My calculations use standard special-relativity formulas for constant proper acceleration and an ideal photon rocket. They are a plausibility check, not a published source.
