Author biography Colleen Hoover (born 11 December 1979, Sulphur Springs, Texas) writes mainly romance and young adult fiction. She studied social work at Texas A&M University–Commerce, self-published *Slammed* in 2012, and signed with Atria Books soon after. *Hopeless* was the first self-published novel to reach #1 on the *New York Times* list. She is best known for *It Ends with Us* (2016) and *Verity* (self-published 2018, republished by Grand Central in 2021). Wikipedia puts her sales at about 20 million books as of October 2022 and notes her 2023 *Time* 100 listing. Author interviews and talks I found no interview about this book that I could open. Summary **Premise.** Kenna Rowan leaves prison after serving time for killing her boyfriend Scotty. She goes back to her hometown to meet the young daughter born while she was inside. The daughter is being raised by Scotty's parents, who want nothing to do with her. The one person who does not slam the door is Ledger Ward, Scotty's best friend and the girl's closest uncle figure, and a slow romance and a reckoning with guilt grow between them. (Search-tool summary of the publisher and Kirkus pages; the film's Wikipedia plot agrees on the main characters, and says the daughter is five. Kirkus and the publisher's listing may give a different age.) **What it is about.** Redemption and whether a person can be forgiven or can forgive herself; grief on both sides of an old loss; and a mother's right to be part of her child's life. The Kirkus review, as quoted by the search tool, praises "captivating dialogue, angst-y characters, and a couple of steamy sex scenes." **Chapter outline.** I found no chapter list. **In the video.** Matesic uses it as the example of Lee Child's second plot: the hero leaves her community and ventures into the unknown, meeting unforeseen obstacles. Here, Kenna is released from prison and travels back to her hometown to connect with the daughter she has never met. She notes it was "recently filmed." The first plot in her example is *The Housemaid* (the "huddling plot", a threat closing in on a character who is stuck). ## 6. Fact-check Overall verdict: **supported**. The video's description matches the book's premise. | Claim | Verdict | Evidence | |---|---|---| | Hoover novel, 2022 | Supported | Wikipedia (film article says "based on the 2022 novel"); Publishers Weekly and Amazon listings | | Published 18 January 2022 by Montlake, ISBN 9781542025607, 335 pages | Supported | Kirkus and Amazon pages as summarized by a search tool; I did not open the Kirkus review | | Kenna is released from prison and returns to her hometown to reach the daughter she has never met (video) | Supported | Matches the film article and the search summary of the book | | "Recently filmed" (video) | Supported | Film released 13 March 2026 | | Child's two plots are "huddling" and "leaving" | Not a claim about this book | From the video's account of a BBC Maestro clip | ## 7.
