# Shy Girl
*By Mia Ballard. Self-published February 2025; UK edition from Wildfire (Hachette UK), November 2025; US edition cancelled March 2026.*
> I did not read the novel and it is not in print, so this note covers the publisher's blurb, Wikipedia's plot summary and news reports about the cancellation. The AI-authorship claim is an allegation. It has not been proven, and the author denies it.

**Where it came up.** Alyssa Matesic, a former editor, cites *Shy Girl* in four videos as her example of publishing's AI scandals:

## 2. Book resources
- **Free copy:** none. The book is in copyright and withdrawn from sale by Hachette, so I list no link. Pirated copies exist; I do not link them.
- Publisher blurb (UK edition) on [The Nile](https://www.thenile.co.nz/books/mia-ballard/shy-girl/9781035437924) and the [Open Library record](https://openlibrary.org/isbn/9781035437924.json).
- **Audiobook:** not checked.
- **Cover:** none found (Open Library has no cover image for this ISBN).
## 3. Author biography
Mia Ballard is a US author. Her Goodreads bio, quoted in the *WSJ* piece below, says she "loves all things horror and is passionate about writing stories focused on feminine rage". *Shy Girl* is her book at the centre of this controversy. I found no further verified biography. The videos describe her as a US author and poet, but I did not confirm the "poet" detail.
## 4. Author interviews and talks
- Ballard answered *The New York Times* by email; the *Guardian* and BBC quote her: "This controversy has changed my life in many ways and my mental health is at an all time low and my name is ruined for something I didn't even personally do." She says she hired an acquaintance to edit the self-published version and that this person used AI, and that she is pursuing legal action.
- Wikipedia cites an earlier interview in which she describes her style as "lyrical, feverish, and introspective". I did not locate the interview.
## 5. Summary
**Plot (Wikipedia; spoilers).** Gia, a young woman with severe OCD, faces eviction. She joins a sugar-dating site and meets Nathan, who offers to clear her debts and pay $2,400 a week if she lives as his pet dog for eight hours a day. He then holds her permanently in a camera-rigged cell. Her human identity erodes and she changes physically. She eventually kills Nathan and flees into the wilderness.
**Chapter outline.** I found no chapter list. The UK edition adds a bonus chapter and the short story "Harold".
**The controversy (news reports).**
- Readers on Goodreads and Reddit questioned the prose in early 2026. A YouTube video titled "I'm pretty sure this book is ai slop" passed 1.2 million views ([Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/books/2026/mar/20/hachette-horror-novel-shy-girl-suspected-ai-use-mia-ballard)).
- Pangram's chief executive Max Spero posted a scan in January 2026 that rated 78 percent of the text AI-generated. *The New York Times* also tested passages with several detectors, but I could only read a search excerpt of its article.
- On 19 March 2026, a day after the *Times* approached it, Hachette announced that Orbit would not publish the book in the US and that Wildfire would stop its UK edition. It cited a lengthy internal review ([BBC](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y9d44jj24o)). The *Times* said it appeared to be the first commercial novel from a major publisher pulled over evidence of AI use (BBC, quoting the *Times*).
- UK sales were about 1,800 print copies (NielsenIQ BookData, per the *Guardian*).
- Later commentary challenges the evidence. Wikipedia reports that a *Wall Street Journal* op-ed by James Taranto, citing blogger Audrey Hinson, says Pangram's scan used a copy of the book from the OceanofPDF piracy site and questions the detector's consistency. I read only the opening of the *WSJ* piece.
**Key ideas for the video series.** Matesic uses the case to argue that AI scrutiny is now a fact of publishing, that publishers need hard questions before acquiring self-published hits, and that suspicion should not fall harder on authors of colour. Those are her opinions, not findings.
## 6. Fact-check
Overall verdict: **mixed**. The cancellation, dates, imprints and Ballard's denial are well sourced. Whether the book was AI-generated is unresolved, and the main detector evidence is contested.
