# Tier 1 — Essex cluster (Chase, Nickerson, Pollard)
Not one body. Three corpora that disagree. The disagreement is the program.
Whaleship *Essex*, Nantucket, sailed 12 Aug 1819, stove by a sperm whale 20 Nov 1820. Eight of twenty-one survived. Six of the crew were Black Americans; popular retellings still under-name them. Owen Coffin, the captain’s cousin, was shot after lots were drawn.
This is the highest moral-heat Tier 1. Build it only after Mitchell has proven the engine and after a trauma review.
## Why Tier 1
- First-person accounts exist from multiple survivors.
- Global demand already paid for by Philbrick and the 2015 film — which is why this project must be *more sourced*, not louder.
- The Whaling Museum is the right room.
- A dual Chase × Nickerson is the distinctive event a virtual human can do that a single Chautauquan cannot.
## Primary material
### Owen Chase (1797–1869), first mate
| Source | Notes |
|---|---|
| *Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex* (New York, Nov 1821) | PD. Melville and most scholars treat it as ghostwritten. **Say that on the label.** Hill 281. |
| Later life | Returned to sea; brothers all became captains. Do not invent old-age psychology. |
Cutoff for Chase-as-1821-narrator: the published book’s horizon. A later “old Chase” would need a second corpus and a second label.
### Thomas Nickerson (1805–1883), cabin boy, 15 at the sinking
| Source | Notes |
|---|---|
| *The Loss of the Ship Essex Sunk by a Whale and the Ordeal of the Crew in Open Boats* | Written ~1876. Lost; found; authenticated; NHA 1984 (Helen Winslow Chase & Edouard A. Stackpole). Penguin edition with Chase, ed. Nathaniel and Thomas Philbrick (2000), is the working classroom text. |
| Poem “The Ship Two Brothers” | Attempts to restore Pollard. |
Nickerson contradicts Chase on who shot Coffin and on tone. That is the dual.
### George Pollard Jr. (1791–1870), captain
| Source | Notes |
|---|---|
| Interview recorded by LMS missionary George Bennet, published in *Journal of Voyages and Travels* (1831) | Pollard’s own framed account, including the lots. |
| Capt. Aaron Paddack letter | First word home, June 1821. Chase used it. |
| Melville’s notes after meeting Pollard on Nantucket | Corpus B, not Pollard’s voice. |
| Later life | Second ship wrecked; became night watchman. Quiet program, not the action hero. |
### Corpus B that must be in the room
- Crew list with the six Black sailors named wherever records allow (William Bond, the steward who saved the chests and instruments, is documentable).
- Coffin family on-island (Pollard had to tell an aunt they had eaten her son).
- Chase vs Nickerson on the shooter: Chase says Charles Ramsdell; Nickerson implies Pollard after offering to take the lot.
- Hollywood and *In the Heart of the Sea* as **modern Corpus D** — never fed into the characters’ mouths.
### C — period knowledge
- 1819–21 whaleboat navigation, Nantucket Quaker shipboard order, what they thought the “Offshore Ground” was.
- No 21st-century marine biology lectures in Chase’s voice.
## Partners
| Org | Role |
|---|---|
| **NHA / Whaling Museum** | Lead venue, Nickerson publication rights conversation, crew/object collections. |
| **New Bedford Whaling Museum** | Parallel logs, Rotch papers, *Essex* context. |
| **Philbrick** | Courtesy if the show’s spine resembles *In the Heart of the Sea*; not required for 1821 Chase (PD) or NHA Nickerson as text. |
| Trauma / education reviewer | Independent of the producer. School programs need a different cut. |
## Programs
1. **Dual: Chase × Nickerson** (hero). Two bodies, two corpora, moderator. Title: *Two accounts of the same boats, 1821 and 1876.* Visitor hears the split on Coffin.
2. **Pollard, later.** Night watchman. Short, after the dual. No spectacle.
3. **Object lesson.** Quadrant, boat compass, a try-pot — what Bond carried off the deck.
4. **Named crew panel.** Not a talking figure for men without corpora; a wall the dual can point at.
Never: unlabeled gore, “are you hungry” jokes, séance, or a composite “Essex survivor.”
## Production steps
1. **Ethics packet before art.** Protocols for cannibalism questions, children’s groups, descendants of Coffin/Ramsdell/Pollard if findable. Visible exit. Out-of-character beat is not optional.
2. **Three corpora, physically separate repos.** Chase 1821 tagged `ghostwritten-possible`. Nickerson tagged `fifty-years-later`. Pollard tagged `interview-1831`.
3. **Question bank with forced refusals.** “What did human flesh taste like” → refuse + offer beat 3. “Was the whale evil” → period cosmology, not *Moby-Dick*.
4. **Likeness.** Sparse portraits. Prioritize age-correct bodies and slops/Quaker captain dress over facial celebrity. Do not use Hemsworth.
5. **Two-character tech.** Floor-passing moderator; only one speaks; captions name the source of the last sentence.
6. **Venue.** After-hours museum slot. Daytime 90-second approach that only orients and points to the booked program.
7. **Eval.** Historians of maritime labor and of African American seafaring (Bolster *Black Jacks* as standard), not only Essex buffs.
## Budget band
$200k–$400k because of two (or three) bodies, trauma design, and museum integration. Do not cheap out on the dual — a single Chase is just a thinner movie.
